They will be responsible for defining, managing & ensuring delivery of the TCD programs for innovation projects. As the voice of the consumer, they will help guide & inform the technology innovation teams on opportunities & implications of technical choices. Through in-depth consumer understanding, they will be responsible for uncovering & translating consumer beliefs, needs & desires into critical performance criteria, design features, experiential cues & breakthrough claims, visuals & demos. This includes defining targets & acceptable ranges for performance (product & pack) & consumer models that directly link innovation choices to consumer desired benefits & experiences. Will work with Consumer Sciences, Advanced Technology, Formulation, Packaging & Technical Services Organization innovation partners.
They will also be responsible for helping with the on-going training of TCD & key global partner functions eg Consumer Sciences. Area of training will be dependent upon their area of consumer expertise.
Leading Technical Consumer Design for Make Up & Packaging (80%)
Lead Make Up TCD program managing the Senior Scientist working in this category. Build & apply consumer models in priority sub-categories within skincare to bring the voice of the consumer into Global R&D to: (i) help identify future innovation projects (ii) drive and inform technical choices and develop product & package technical success criteria (iii) drive our technical profiling capabilities through the development of consumer relevant methods, targets and ranges to delight consumers. Ensure holistic design approach from project outset, identifying & addressing critical questions, exploring & defining opportunities, tensions, drivers and barrier to consumer acceptance and loyalty.
Become the Subject Matter Expert in TCD on skincare packaging - function and design. Lead placement and analysis of packaging design benchmarking studies and integrate learnings with blind benchmarking data. Define design & function success criteria by sub-category & develop action plan with innovation teams / brands on how to address.
Create truly Global Consumer understanding by Identifying how to bring the US and Chinese consumer voices together for a more global understanding - with similarities, nuances and differences identified and incorporated into global projects.
Developing Technical Consumer Design Capabilities (15%)
Coach and develop the TCD capability, developing consumer research techniques, consumer models and technical profiling approaches. Help drive TCD awareness throughout Global R&D & ensure maximum impact & utilization of learnings. Role model collaboration & the power of the team. Practice abundance mentality - generous in sharing praise & credit. Manage 1 new hire Senior Scientist working skincare in TCD.
Corporate & ONE R&D Activities (5%)
Proactive participation in Corporate & Global R&D (including safety) programs that drive organizational capability & individual growth eg EDG communities, Challenger Spirit Task Forces, mentoring etc. Tailored to reflect candidate's interests, skills & goals.
Extensive experience in Research and Development (preferably in the Beauty Industry), leading projects to identify & action consumer insights to drive innovation design (benefits, product / packaging characteristics & sensory features) & consumer communication programs (claims, demos & visual). Must have a proven track record of uncovering consumer needs and desires, translating them into technical success criteria, designing technical methods to profile & correlate product performance with consumer acceptance and delivering superior holistic product / pack and proposition designs. Experienced delivering innovation in both established and in new to the world categories. Demonstrated strong technical aptitude through ability to develop in-depth understanding of upstream technologies and translate them into consumer desirable benefits, claims, product attributes. Experienced partnering with technical partners to build consumer & technical models that guide innovation programs, brand strategies and product design. Qualified in design, execution and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative consumer research techniques. Experience working with the Chinese consumer strongly preferred. Track record of very strong people development including development of new capabilities within organizations with sensitivity and resilience.
