Job description

BUSINESS IMPACT STATEMENT
Responsible for supporting the execution of Kohl's corporate public relations and external communications efforts in order to garner positive press coverage for Kohl's business priorities and mitigate potential negative press coverage, as appropriate.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Media Relations
- Draft strategic public relations plans, press releases, articles, media pitches, and other communications materials for key business initiatives. Written drafts should require 1-2 rounds of manager review.
- Develop strong regional and trade media contacts across a regional geographic territory; regularly pitch press releases and story ideas to regional and trade media; coordinate in-store media opportunities and provide counsel to store and district managers.
- Proactively monitor and research news of the day, including Daily Headlines Report, to identify and share key trends across the news media landscape, retail industry and corporate PR field. Proactively offer pitch ideas grounded in news media insights and competitive retail landscape.
- Field reactive media calls and draft informed recommendations on how to respond, including the background context, rationale for approach and suggested media holding statements.
- Monitor and track Kohl's and competitor media coverage to compile coverage recaps, media audits and quarterly reports. Identify themes, insights and key learnings from media coverage and research to summarize results.
- Develop the Kohl's Daily Headlines Report by monitoring a 24-hours news cycle, making edits as needed and distributing the daily morning report to company leadership. Consistently identify and route notable press coverage with impact to Kohl's business.
- Support territory incidents by providing counsel and support to the field and store teams. Resolve issues from roadblocks and identify future process improvement opportunities.Program Coordination
- Lead individual programs within public relations strategies from start to finish. Assist in the execution of existing and future public relations strategies to include research, event planning, and extensive writing such as media concepts, pitch angles, talking points, fact sheets, media alerts and press releases.
- Make recommendations for PR programs and initiatives with a reputational lens.
- Track results to provide comprehensive measurement of program results and press coverage. Demonstrate an understanding of press coverage sentiment and key themes to recap results and notable highlights.
- Assess program results on a regular basis to understand what worked, what did not work and recommended go forward actions. Adjust public relations plans in real-time, as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain relationships with internal business partners to stay up-to-date on business strategies and key initiatives.

Profile

Required
- Four-year degree in public relations, journalism, communications or other applicable area of study.
- Minimum 3-5 years experience in basic public relations, including local or trade media relations.
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
- Strong problem solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in AP style.
- Strong interpersonal skills, capable of working in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.
- Ability to work on multiple programs with various components simultaneously.Preferred
- Experience working with regional and trade media across digital, print and broadcast outlets.
- Experience project managing public relations initiatives in a fast paced environment.Special Requirements
